Howdy, folks
Ive decided my project for the 2007-2008 Winter holidays is to turn my old desktop into a server. Thing is, i've never doen anything like this before. so my question for you, the SOCIS people, is what do i need to do this? i've heard Linux is really good, but i *might* use it as a server for gaming, and as we all know, Linux doesnt like games. SO i'm pretty sure i want to use a windows-based platform.
If nobody knows anything about windows servers then i'll do Linux though. The main priority is setting up a server.
Thanks alot
~Hoyle
Same!
I have a similar project coming up, as I'm building a gaming machine. Here's what I plan on doing with the old one:
File Server (Storing all my storage on 2 mirrored harddrives)

Myth Box/PVR

And finally, I want to be able to set up a virtual desktop on my gaming machine, as the server will be in the living room. I want to do the equivalent of how I can Beddie into a linux account and code from there. Since all my data will be stored on the mirrored drives on the server (the gaming machine will have very small hard drives), this is how I plan on accessing pictures, movies, etc that I have. This, I don't know how to do yet, and would appreciate info as well.
Hope I helped, Hoyle.

For your fileserver, you
For your fileserver, you should set up the drives using LVM, Drew got me hooked on it. Basically you create a virtual drive that is a pool of drives, and you can add drives and expand your volume automagically without having to worry about re-formatting or anything. I've been writing a guide on setting it up in Ubuntu, when I'm done I'll post a link here for you guys.

Good links!
I've been thinking of setting up a server for awhile, and those links made it sound awsome easy. Thanks for posting them!
Many games have linux
Many games have linux servers, just not clients.
Figure 2x the HW specs for Windows vs. a linux box to do the same things.
FreeBSD is awesome as well.

In fact, I'll go further
In fact, I'll go further than andrew and say that MOST to all games have linux servers... even half life and half life 2, which only have windows clients, also have linux servers.

no. but seriously, i thought
no.
but seriously, i thought you meant you were gonna do it via windows I'll check those links out today, i figured they were just windows links and therefor, useless to a linux project.
