im reinstalling windows on a machine a built from parts from 2 different machines, both were XP boxes. but during installation an error message comes up saying the hardware isn't ACPI compatible. it suggests going to a website to update my BIOS, but i kinda need the internet ( or an OS for that matter) to do that. any ideas?

If you need the internet,

If you need the internet, you could use an Ubuntu live disk to download the upgrade.

With most modern

With most modern motherboards you can download the new bios, put it on a flash key, and flash it directly from the current bios. My Asus P5K-VM does this. Alternatively, many manufacturers offer CD (or floppy) images that contain a version of DOS and a flashing program.

I find it highly unlikely that any machine shipped in the last decade would not support ACPI. I suggest you check you bios settings; ACPI can be disabled in the bios.
