You can have 7 AI players in a skirmish, so presumably you can have 8 players in a game. There's no one on RA1 on the resnet LAN so I caont check for sure :D
Unfortunately to my knowledge the Original StarCraft is not a contender, as to my knowledge we will not be able to get legal copies or a legal licence for free, and we would prefer to run the lan gaming event legally. :P
I played a bit of RA / C&C when EA made them free downloads. I ended up finding them to be really frustrating, in that simple commands which are easy in later games just can't be done. The UI for RTS's has really come a long way.
UT has the advantage in that FPS UI's have really stagnated in the past 10 years.
One year BZFlag was run, and that was tons of fun. Since it's not well known, just about everyone was at the same skill level, which was good.
'considered "#1 RTS of All Time" by Gamepsy'
'its source has been released under the GPL,'
old enough to run well on the lab boxes
possible to run natively under linux now?
BZ flag was also fun, i think we ran in twice...

I can't remember, did C&C allow eight players (ala Blizzard) or just heads up?
Original Starcraft is also a contender.

Unfortunately that's a remake with AFAIK farily heavy graphical requirements. But if it runs it would be awesome!
