This policy applies to all Society of Computing & Information Science (SOCIS) Electronic Services, including but not limited to:
* Web Hosting
* Forums
* Shell Account Access
* E-Mail
By agreeing to this AUP, you also agree to the guidelines outlined in the University of Guelph Acceptable Use Policy, The CIS Department Acceptable Use Policy, and any applicable policies from Computing & Communication Services or the Listing of Accessibility Policies.
Our services authenticate using the University of Guelph central accounts. The Society of Computing & Information Science does not retain the passwords of any users. The IP addresses and Central ID of all users are logged to aid in enforcing the conditions of this document. This information will not be disclosed to any third parties. We are not responsible for any privacy leaks or hacking attempts that may lead to your account being compromised.
You may not use SOCIS services for the storing or distributing of illegal materials, offensive content, or any content that is used for personal profit outside of designated areas. SOCIS administrators and moderators reserve the right to remove any content that violates these terms. SOCIS will not be held responsible for any materials generated by its users.
SOCIS services are to be used primarily as an academic resource, and as a means of communicating and socializing with other students, professors or teaching assistants.
You agree not to use any of the following:
- Obscene, offensive or hate speak content as outlined in documents linked to this one. Violations of this type will be handled as minor offenses, except for hate speak, which will be regarded as a major offense.
- Materials that would qualify as "Academic Misconduct" outlined in superseding documents. Violations of this type will be handled as major offenses.
- Harassing content: as any improper conduct that is directed at and offensive to another person(s) which the individual knew or ought reasonably to have known would cause offense or harm. It comprises any
objectionable act, comment or display that demeans, belittles or causes personal humiliation or embarrassment, or any act of intimidation or threat. Violations of this type will be handled as major offenses.
- Disorderly conduct: Unnecessary interruption of the peace, quiet, or order of a community. Violations of this type will be handled as minor offenses.
- Commercial content: SOCIS services may not directly support or aid in the promotion of any for-profit entity for which the individual may benefit. Violations of this type will be handled as major offenses.
- "Spamming": Posting of redundant content a multiple number of times. This will be regarded as a minor offense.
Minor offenses are handled by SOCIS and are not necessarily reported to external bodies. Consequences to such actions include but are not limited to - Warnings, suspensions and bans. Minor offenses may be escalated to major offenses if there are repeated instances, or at the discretion of SOCIS executive. Major offenses are subject to the same consequences as minor as well as being reported to the department or other university legal body. Any issue relating to web services, minor or major should be directed to the Webmaster. Appeals to, or clarification of, disciplinary actions should be made to the Webmaster. If the issue is with the Webmaster, or there is a conflict of interest, appeals may be directed to exec@socis.ca.
Some services offered by SOCIS use cookies to store information on your local computer. These cookies do not contain any personal information about its users.
You agree to report any violations of these terms to the SOCIS Webmaster(s) or administrators. Any users who are found in violation of these terms will be reported to the applicable authorities, which may result in loss of privilege to services, loss of central account, expulsion or legal action.
