Challenge One Description


Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in this year’s Tri-Wizard tournament!

Your first challenge is to steal a golden egg out from under the noses of three sleeping dragons. In preparation for this daring stunt, your good friend Hermione has drawn out a narrow path from start to finish, where the dragons will not be able to smell or hear you! Stray from the path and you are sure to be burned, follow it closely, and you will be richly rewarded.

Return safely to the starting line with the egg to bring glory to your school!

Goal:
  1. Follow the path closely, to the golden egg. leaving the path will end the run and your final score will be your score at the moment of leaving the path.
    1. A robot is considered to be on the path if the line is between the outer edges of both the left and right rear tires.
  2. Your robot’s next goal is to take and hold the golden egg.
    1. The golden egg will be a 3 inch (diameter) styrofoam ball.
  3. With the golden egg secured, follow the second path back to the starting position.
Parameters:
  1. The challenge area will be 6 feet wide by 6 feet long. Enclosed by a 3 inch tall wooden frame.
  2. The robot will begin in a set starting position, placed facing the path, by the judges. The starting position and direction will be the same for all competitors
  3. The path will be marked by a 2 inch wide black line against a white surface.
  4. Checkpoints will be marked along the path in very light grey lines perpendicular to the path. The robot does not need to take notice of these lines, they are only for the judges to score.
    1. The number of checkpoints will only be revealed when the track is revealed on the day of the competition.
  5. The path will never cross itself.
  6. The path will be continuous, (the robot will not need to turn around and traverse the same path back) it will lead to the egg, and back.
  7. A medium grey line will indicate the robot has reached the egg’s location, it will sit 2 inches ahead of the grey line on the path.
  8. The path will stay at least 4 inches away from the walls at all times.
Points:
  1. Passing a checkpoint will be worth 3 points each. (The entire robot must pass the checkpoint line to be gain the 3 points)
  2. Returning safely to the starting position WITHOUT the egg is worth 5 points
  3. Returning safely with the egg to the starting position WITH the egg is worth 10 points.
  4. Any ties in points will be resolved by the time of the particular runs.
Rules
  1. Teams must only use parts from their one base lego mindstorms kit
  2. Teams must have their bluetooth turned off on their brick.
  3. Robots must be within 1 ft by 1ft by 1ft in size.
  4. A run will end once a robot successfully reaches the starting position after traversing the path, or it leaves the path. This time will

Challenge Two Description


Congratulations on making it to the final Tri-Wizard tournament challenge!

For this challenge, you will have to navigate a maze to acquire the Tri-Wizard cup and win the tournament for your school! The path is perilous but once again Hermione has found a way to highlight the correct turns for you. Follow the correct path or you may find yourself trapped in the maze forever.

Reach the end of the maze to win the tournament and bring glory to your school!

Goal:
  1. Follow the path closely, to the center of the maze. Leaving the path will end the run and your final score will be your score at the moment of leaving the path.
    1. A robot is considered to be on the path if the line is between the outer edges of both the left and right tires.
  2. The correct path will alternate from grey to black then black to grey at each turn
    1. Example to clarify: The path will begin black, when the maze diverges into two paths, one path will be grey, the other will be black. The shade that does not match your current path’s colour is the correct path. The other will be a dead end.
Parameters:
  1. The challenge area will be 6 feet wide by 6 feet long. Enclosed by a 3 inch tall wooden frame.
  2. The robot will begin in a set starting position, placed facing the path, by the judges. The starting position and direction will be the same for all competitors
  3. The path will be marked by a 2 inch wide black line against a white surface.
    1. There will only be two shades, black and grey.
    2. The path will always start black and will not diverge until at least 6 inches from the starting position.
    3. At each divergent point there will only ever be two options, Left and Right, both will be exactly 90 degrees from the current path in opposite directions.
    4. The wrong path will be a dead end.
  4. The start and end positions will be marked by 1ft by 1ft grey squares
  5. The path will never cross itself.
  6. There will only be one path that leads to the end of the maze.
  7. The path will stay at least 4 inches away from the walls at all times.
Points:
  1. Taking a correct turn will be worth 3 points
  2. Reaching the end of the maze will be worth 12 points
  3. Any ties in points will be resolved by the time of the particular runs.
Rules
  1. Teams must only use parts from their one Education lego mindstorms kit
  2. Teams must have their bluetooth turned off on their brick.
  3. Robots must be within 1 ft by 1ft by 1ft in size.
  4. A run will end once a robot successfully reaches the center of the maze or the robot has left the path entirely (correct path or not). This final time will be used.

Rules


  1. Teams may only use parts from their kits.
  2. Teams must use a standard LEGO Mindstorm EV3 kit.
  3. Teams can only use one touch, one ultrasonic, and one light/colour sensor.
  4. Teams MUST have their Bluetooth turned off on their brick.
  5. Robots must not be larger than 1 foot x 1 foot x 1 foot.
  6. Teams will designate one person to end their run, and only that person may call the run.
